You all are angst-monkeys ;p Thank you much for the comments, and I'll work on the next instalment over the weekend ;)

The ever-wonderful [livejournal.com profile] tsuki_no_bara,wrangler of the first original fic ficathon which inspired mine last year, is back for a second round, with a new and nifty original fic ficathon structure for this year.

Actually - I lie - I haven't pimped this last month's High Ball yet, and I do get all godmother y and invested in the stories I edit, [even the ones I never post about because I am teh crap sometimes].

But this month's really is a delight - Trick and Seth - Navajo cousin-brothers - are a wonderful pair of characters with so many layers and secrets, and there are moments when the story is fantastically domesticated - in a you can smell the dust and taste the coffee and almost feel the heat on your shoulders and the slide of skin under your finger tips kind of way - and moments that are just down-right creepy. There's shape shifting and story telling and sex and surprises.

Check out My Brother, Coyote here [for other file types follow the link at the bottom] and to read an interview with the author, take a look here.

*****

Also
- I have Thoughts about the process of editing and how it's affecting my writing, and the communal aspect of doing it as beta-ing for friends vs doing it as work-for-the-press and [livejournal.com profile] logophilos's entry about finding a beta reader and the nature of those relationships, from a little way back, over at [livejournal.com profile] the_originals, but, fortunately or un, I have to get back to the day job instead. Hey ho.

Sensory Overload – an original fiction ficathon – is NOW OPEN.

Thank you to everyone who helped me out, everyone who convinced me this was worth trying, everyone who edited and beta-read stories, everyone who answered the requests for mentors, and most of all – everyone who wrote. This thing only exists because of you.

I have one more thing to ask of you. Send feedback.

Send an author an email, or leave them a comment.[1] Tell them what you liked, and what didn’t work for you. Send them a single line ‘I was here – that was fun’ note, or write them a three page explanation, or anything in between. Whatever you have time for and whatever floats your boat, but please – let people know that their story found an audience.

Send feedback, and if you read something that really does something for you – tell people about it, in your own journals, in communities like [livejournal.com profile] the_originals, email the link to the friend you thought might like it – in general, go forth and spread the word!

Thank you, and happy reading.

[1] Most everyone should have an email or comment link attached to their story, but if you find one that doesn’t, send your fb to me, telling me who it’s for, and I’ll try and pass it along.

You've Got Me Dreamingl by Rykaine
As a wise woman said something over a year ago, why should fan-ficers have all the fun? So this summer, I present Sensory Overload, a ficathon for original character writers.

The way this is going to work is:

#1 - You tell me that you want to join in.
#2 - I give you your assignment, in the form of a quotation for you to use as a title, and five 'prompts' for the five senses.
#3 - You write a story inspired by the assignment, knowing that while you are slaving over a hot keyboard so are lots of other people.
#4 - On the appointed day all the stories are posted, in a bonanza of original fiction.

The assignments will look something like this.

The title of your Sensory Overload story will be : In your favorite darkness.

Your story should contain reference to at least three of the following prompts.

Sight : Blue
Sound : Wind
Smell : Petrol
Touch : Rough
Taste : Orange

The references may be literal or metaphorical, explicit or implicit, but they should be there.

For example. If the taste prompt was 'Orange' you could

- write about two of your characters feeding each other orange segments in bed
- have one of your characters drinking Fanta or dropping an empty OJ carton in the bin
- mention the citrus tang of sweat
- compare the 'taste of success' to something orange-y
- 101 other things I haven't thought of.

Sound good? Excellent! - come sign up! And pass the word - the more the merrier.

NB - There will almost certainly be smut in most flavours amongst the stories submitted, but that's not required. The only thing that your story has to have is original characters and a relationship with the title and prompts in your assignment.

You can host your story yourself on your website or livejournal, and submit a link, or you can send me your story and I will host it for you. You do not need a livejournal to participate, just an email address.

*****

Key Dates

Deadline for sign ups : Friday 8th July
Assignments go out on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July
Deadline for stories to be submitted : Friday 12th August

Please only sign up if you honestly think that you're going to be able to complete on time. Obviously, sometimes, things happen, but if you already know that there's no way you can write while you're vacationing on Mars for the whole month, then - maybe next time? If something does come up and you absolutely cannot complete on time, please email me

*****

Key rules

Stories should be 1000 words or more of original fiction. There's no upper word limit.

Do not post your story anywhere public before the 12th August. Talking about the process etc is all part of the fun, but please keep your actual story under wraps until the launch day.

Please make sure that your story has been edited for spelling, grammar and formatting. If you are looking for someone to beta-read for you, or just for some general hand-holding, you might want check out this post.

I've been having Thoughts about the nature of the Original fic community, blah-de-blah, which I may elaborate on later, but as the ideas been turning around in my head for some time, and as it's just over a year since tsuki_nu_bara's Original Ficathon, I'm going to ask in the mean time : what do you think?

[Poll #503159]

- and I'm interested in a really wide spectrum of answers, so please - spread the word.

Danke.

Written for [livejournal.com profile] tsuki_no_bara's Original Character Ficathon, with thanks to [livejournal.com profile] turps33 and [livejournal.com profile] kenovay for the beta reading - any and all remaining mistakes are my own.

Recipient : [livejournal.com profile] witchwillow
Request : Physical restraint of passion/need, unexpected gentleness, mental unity, 'unexpected soulmates', no romantacized declarations of love or fluff
rating(s): R-NC17 for smut. R for violence

Confession : I did not hit the rating requested, although it's there in the 'deleted scenes' if willow wants me to write them for her.

Chosen

I was chosen because of my mother. She is favoured of Lady Ellan, has been for so long that I barely heard the innuendoes by the time I left the manor, and even at 16 I did not pretend to myself that I was chosen for any merit of my own. If I have a talent it is to be overlooked, invisible, and that is not a talent designed to be noticed in a manor court full of peacocks and a manor kitchen full of busyness and braggarts both. Being chosen changed things for a brief while, but that faded with the midwinter evergreens.

Mentors [1]

This post will be my only involvement. Any problems should be worked out between yourself and your mentor/mentee, not with me. I make no promises at all about who will volunteer for what, who you will find to help you, or if anyone will even sign up for this, but in the hope that it might be helpful, I'm posting it anyway.

Each mentor and mentee will work out what works best for them, but in general I'd anticipate that mentors will be available to do some or all of the following:

  • Provide feedback on story ideas.

  • General hand-holding while you figure out what you're going to do with your assignment / characters.

  • Beta the finished story.

If you are looking for a mentor, please leave a comment below giving a description of what sort of help you're looking for, and very broadly what sort of story you're thinking of [fantasy / western / present day / slash / het / etc] If you can, a link to any other writing you have online would also be useful.

If you would like to volunteer as a mentor, please keep an eye on the comments to this post, and make contact directly with anyone you think you would like to work with. If you want to comment to tout your services, please feel free!

I will not be assigning mentors! People will be adding to this post as they sign up to the Sensory Overload challenge, and as they start to have story ideas, and mentors will be checking back as and when, so if you don't get a reply straight away, don't panic.

A final note: Your mentor may also be writing their own Sensory Overload story as well, so mentees may have to complete their story in advance of the deadline so that both stories can be betaed in time. Each couple will work out their own schedule, of course, but it's something to keep in mind if you're looking for a mentor. Please respect that and work with any deadlines that your mentor asks of you so that everybody can have a good time.

Good luck and happy writing!
