Sensory Overload - an original ficathon.

As a wise woman said something over a year ago, why should fan-ficers have all the fun? So this summer, I present Sensory Overload, a ficathon for original character writers.

The way this is going to work is:

#1 - You tell me that you want to join in.
#2 - I give you your assignment, in the form of a quotation for you to use as a title, and five 'prompts' for the five senses.
#3 - You write a story inspired by the assignment, knowing that while you are slaving over a hot keyboard so are lots of other people.
#4 - On the appointed day all the stories are posted, in a bonanza of original fiction.

The assignments will look something like this.

The title of your Sensory Overload story will be : In your favorite darkness.

Your story should contain reference to at least three of the following prompts.

Sight : Blue
Sound : Wind
Smell : Petrol
Touch : Rough
Taste : Orange

The references may be literal or metaphorical, explicit or implicit, but they should be there.

For example. If the taste prompt was 'Orange' you could

- write about two of your characters feeding each other orange segments in bed
- have one of your characters drinking Fanta or dropping an empty OJ carton in the bin
- mention the citrus tang of sweat
- compare the 'taste of success' to something orange-y
- 101 other things I haven't thought of.

Sound good? Excellent! - come sign up! And pass the word - the more the merrier.

NB - There will almost certainly be smut in most flavours amongst the stories submitted, but that's not required. The only thing that your story has to have is original characters and a relationship with the title and prompts in your assignment.

You can host your story yourself on your website or livejournal, and submit a link, or you can send me your story and I will host it for you. You do not need a livejournal to participate, just an email address.

Deadline for sign ups : Friday 8th July
Assignments go out on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July
Deadline for stories to be submitted : Friday 12th August

Please only sign up if you honestly think that you're going to be able to complete on time. Obviously, sometimes, things happen, but if you already know that there's no way you can write while you're vacationing on Mars for the whole month, then - maybe next time? If something does come up and you absolutely cannot complete on time, please email me

Stories should be 1000 words or more of original fiction. There's no upper word limit.

Do not post your story anywhere public before the 12th August. Talking about the process etc is all part of the fun, but please keep your actual story under wraps until the launch day.

Please make sure that your story has been edited for spelling, grammar and formatting. If you are looking for someone to beta-read for you, or just for some general hand-holding, you might want check out this post.
