“So – d’you think he might like you too?”
Trent did his best not to blush while elbowing her in the ribs.
“Vo! Shut up!” he shook his head.
They were crossing back over the small courtyard between the class room building and the dorm after the Saturday morning class, and he should probably be grateful that she’d waited until they were at least out of the building. The disdainful look Kaitleen shot the pair of them as she strode past made him wish Vo’d managed to wait longer still – say, like, forever. OK, so maybe that was asking too much, but still!
Vo grinned back sunnily,
“Aww – c’mon – he’s pretty cute – I mean kinda weird, with the hair and everything – but cute.”
“Well, yeah.” Trent’ intonation made it clear that the relative cuteness of his favorite pupil was not even an issue. He kept his thoughts about the relative weirdness of dying part of your hair bright aqua green all to himself, seeing as Vo thought Ru was pretty much a freak, and that was before she’d met any of his really outlandish looking friends … but the cute part he could agree on wholeheartedly.
“And you were so checking him out.”
“I was not!” Trent protested, in defiance of all truth.
Vo raised an eyebrow and gave him a look while she held the door open.
“OK, so I was checking him out – he’s cute!” he admitted.
She smiled. “So – d’you think he likes you?” she repeated. “’Cos I think he might – I mean, you didn’t see, ‘cos you were off with um – what’s her name – the dumpy one who doesn’t seem to know what her ankles do?”
“Mrs Carleson?”
“Her - he was totally watching you. I reckon he was checking you out Trent-baby!”
She announced her conclusion like it was the winning lottery numbers. Trent rolled his eyes. Again.
“He was so not. For one thing, not everybody’s gay Vo, I mean he's like, some competition grade skater guy, you know?”
Vo’s expression said ‘yes, and?’ louder than words.
“and – - he was probably just trying to see what he was meant to be *doing* - we are the demonstration models after all. And just - no way.”
“Yes way.”
“Nope.” He insisted, and the hesitated. "You think?”
“Totally.”
“That would totally be the way my life works, if he was, which he wasn’t, with him being a pupil and so I’m never going to be able to say anything to him outside of class, let alone anything else.”
“Trent – you do know you’re an idiot sometimes?”
“Yes?”
“Good. Now – you coming out with us this afternoon – Me, Lee, Russell and Sal are going up to the Abbey – maybe grab a movie?”
“Sorry – I really need to get some work done n that composition project for Mr Matthews.”
“I thought you got that done the other night?”
“Not even close – you know how much I suck at composition. I’m going to be lucky if I get it in on time at all,”
“You do not suck mister. But – if it’s not done, I guess I shouldn’t stand between you and academic glory. You sure?”
“Yeah – thanks though”
By now they had reached the bend of the staircase where they needed to separate. Vo ran up the first few steps before turning back and calling after Trent.
“He so was!”
“Was not!” Trent yelled back, and ducked into his room before she could embarrass him any further. She might look sweet and innocent, but Trent knew better.
He stood for a moment, leaning back on the door, and let himself grin.
The other boy so was not checking him out, but that didn’t stop Trent watching him, now did it? He let out a long breath and shook his head, clearing his mind.
Right, shower, and then time to wrestle with that assignment. Maybe phone Ru and bend his ear about this week’s observations.
Damn, the guy was cute though.
