The only time Luke made a point of assigning ownership of Sam and Sam was when their cage needed cleaning out or when one of them had done something particularly cute and psychotic to one of Walker's more prised possessions. They way he figured it, him and Walker keeping the terrible twins entertained in the kitchen while Jenna cleaned and cleared the run in the conservatory was a pretty fair division of labour. Especially when he'd already done his turn with the housework and mopped the kitchen floor, and when Walker had bartered cleaning for cooking for his share.

Right now Walker was sat in his shirt sleeves, tie loosened and askew, explaining the finer points of teaching biology to kidlets and encouraging Samson to climb over his shoulders while Samuel was lying in wait under the chair for the piece of string Luke was threading around the table legs. Jenna's radio was playing something soft and swing-ish in the background, the evening was still warm and light, evening sun catching the blond hairs on Walker's forearms, and pretty much all was well with Luke's world. Not entirely perfect, given the continuing job situation and the temporary shift patterns and the phone calls from his parents who were clearly hoping to hear that their only son was making progress in the world, but over all, pretty damn peachy.

Walker's finger tapping lightly against his forehead jerked Luke back from his thoughts.

"OK babes – penny for them?"

"How do you do that?" Luke asked, angling his head so Walker's hand would slide down into a caress that would bring the heel of his hand into range for Luke to kiss.

"Interestingly enough, because nothing about growing beans on blotting paper warrants that frown."

Walker's finger traced Luke's lips once before he sat back and returned to teasing Samson and waiting for an answer. That was a habit Luke appreciated – giving him time to get his words in order without getting impatient.

"Just thinking about job stuff really – my mum was on the phone earlier. I should probably get that Simpson's application done tonight."

"That the network manger one?" and then on Luke's nod. "Fair enough – but after dinner, yeah/"

"Hell yeah – like I'm dumb enough to walk away from this."

Luke smiled, taking in the whole domestic scene.

"You have a point there." Walker smiled back, and then found his feet, depositing an armful of ferret into Luke's lap on the way. "I should get on an cook though – stir fry good for you?."

Luke took advantage of his boyfriend's proximity to slide an appreciative hand over his backside.

"Now now guys – not in the kitchen!"

Jenna timed her entrance perfectly to make both men start a little. Luke recovered first, allowing his hand to curve into Walker's back pocket.

"Now now Jenna : you expect us to believe you never did anything at all ever in here with any of your young men and maidens?" he teased.

And when Samson nipped at the ball of his thumb because Luke had stopped petting him and Jenna stuck out her tongue and Walker had chuckled and wriggled for comic effect, Luke was pretty damn sure that this was the way he wanted things to be.
