Trent is my ballet boy : his story can be found indexed here. I asked for a ficlet with music, motion and lighting effects from [livejournal.com profile] tsuki_no_bara and it kicked this loose for me.

******

Watching videos of performances, Trent could never quite see it how an audience would see. Video was a tool – a learning exercise that they used in class and on stage – and even when it was professional footage of a famous company the music always sounded wrong, and he could feel himself watching for technique instead of just *feeling* the way you could with a real performance. Which just made Mika's photographs even more wonderful.

Vo had had to argue and wheedle and plead to get her older sister permission to follow the spring performance from rehearsal to stage. She'd been phenomenal at staying out of the way though, crouching in corners and managing to blend in so well that most of the time they had completely forgotten that there was an outsider in the studio.

And the end result was perfect.

She sent Vo a copy of the album she had submitted for her class, and before it got passed around the school proper, she and Trent sat side by side on Vo's narrow bed, pouring over the images, the moments Mika had captured, clear and sharp and perfect.

And for the first time Trent could see what they would look like on stage, could see the magic working it's way over their skin, the glitter and shadow of stage lights creating something out of this world that wasn't really any of them. Moments when they all took wings, floating in music.

Neither of them could rub the smiles from their lips.

The sleeves were slick under their fingers and the photos saturated with colour and motion. The sequence of the chorus working in the rehearsal studio were almost stop motion, and left both of them humming the violin part that the dancers were following.

He went with Vo to hand over the thick portfolio, knocking cautiously on the office door, and if it was a tug to part with it so soon, the moment soon passed. As they walked back across the courtyard Vo nudged him with a shoulder.

"Trent?"

"Yeah?"

"There are three whole boxes of pictures she didn’t submit."

"Tea Room?"

"Oh yes!"
