Mal spent a good five minutes fingering the coins in her palm before she actually picked up the payphone and started dialing.
‘Hi Dad, it’s me.’
Must be a quiet morning for him if he was answering his own phone, and not in a meeting. Hopefully that would put him in a good mood.
‘Amy, love, how are you?’
‘Um ... not so great Dad. That’s why I’m calling.’
After a moment she interrupted him.
‘Dad? Dad - really - it’s nothing too serious. I’m ok - nothing broken or anything, I’m ok.’
Well, hopefully nothing broken, and sort of more or less ok, but that was a lot less likely to help him calm down and not decide to send her straight home to her mother.
‘I was mugged. Last night. I’m ok! I’m doing ok ... just a bit bruised and. Yes dad, I’ve got friends looking after me. Really. I’ll be fine. It’s just... No daddy, I didn’t go to the police. No. Dad, I didn’t see their faces ... what are the police going to do? Daddy, no - that’s not why I rang. I - I just wanted to speak to you, just to talk.’
She rested her head against the cold metal of the phone and just let his voice rumble over her, worried, and taking charge. Suddenly she was just tired. His voice was fading in and out, and her eyelids were so heavy. The thin sharp support of the caffeine was going to give out soon. So very tired.
